Gregor Riddell plays the cello and writes music. He is a founder member of numerous ensembles including BirdWorld, Tre Voci, Solstice Quartet, Living Room in London and Odysseus Piano Trio with whom he has performed internationally. During a Banff Creative Residency Gregor wrote a large scale work for ‘cello and electronics ‘Their Scintillant Blades’ where he first developed musical partnerships with Mira Benjamin and Adam Teixeira with whom he continues to work alongside in creative projects nu:nord and BirdWorld respectively.
Recent commissions include Asamisimasa Ensemble premiering ‘Hiraeth’ at Borealis Festival (Norway), a double cello concerto premiered in La Paz (Bolivia) and a work for cello and electronics written for the BEAST sound system at Birmingham University. Galya Bisengalieva recently premiered his new work for solo violin and electronics called ‘Latent, Paper Tiger’. Gregor has also written for the London Contemporary Orchestra with whom he is a regular principle player having collaborated with artists such as Radiohead, Actress, among many others and recently performed string quartet works in the 2017 USA tour collaborating with Spitfire Audio.
With Rob Lewis, Gregor recently set up SVS – an Oslo-based independent internet radio station broadcasting adventurous music from the Nordics. Since starting in December 2016, SVS has presented weekly mixes by artists from a diverse array of genres and hosted live events at Cafe Oto among other venues.
Since living in Norway he has performed with artists including Mette Henriette, Streifenjunko, Vilde & Inga, 1816, Cikada Ensemble; recorded chamber works by Simon Steen-Andersen with the Oslo Sinfonietta; become a member of composers’ collective NMK; and, recently formed a trio with Karl Nyberg and Bernt Isak Wærstad called KGB.
Gregor was born in London, studied music at Cambridge and composition at the Royal College of Music. He currently lives both in London and Oslo with his partner Torun.
